Essentials: The Paletero’s Frozen Treats
On hot summer days, listen for the sound of brass bells
On hot summer days in South Milwaukee, the gentle tinkling rhythm of brass bells sounds in the distance. For children and the young-at-heart, that can only mean one thing: The paleta man is coming. Hands burnished bronze from pushing the cart in the sun, his feet beat the pavement as he pushes an icebox on wheels filled to the brim with paletas, Mexican water- or cream-based pops loaded with fruit. Their flavors are more exciting than those of standard popsicles, and sometimes the paletas come dipped in chocolate and rolled in coconut or flecked with fiery red chili flakes. Bring extra cash and make sure to tip the man who so simply brings refreshment and joy. —Natalia Mendez
